What If You Had To Travel Here? The Appian Way

The Appian Way, or Via Appia, is one of the most famous ancient roads in Roman history. Initiated in 312 BCE by the Roman censor Appius Claudius Caecus, it was originally built to connect Rome to Capua, and later extended to Brindisi in southeast Italy. The road starts in Rome and travels southeast, passing through important cities like Capua, Beneventum (modern Benevento), and Tarentum (modern Taranto), before reaching Brindisi. The entire length of the Appian Way is approximately 350 miles (563 kilometers).

The Appian Way played a crucial role in the expansion and consolidation of the Roman Republic and Empire by facilitating troop movements and trade. The road was constructed with remarkable engineering precision, using layers of stone, gravel, and sand for durability. Large, flat paving stones were placed on top, creating a smooth, solid surface. Milestones along the road provided information on distances and destinations, reflecting the Roman attention to detail and infrastructure management. Some significant events on the Appian way include the crucifixion of Spartacus's followers along its route following the Third Servile War in 71 BCE.
