The Torajan culture is deeply rooted in animistic beliefs, which revolve around the spirits of ancestors and nature. They have a complex social structure and a strong emphasis on community and family ties. Traditional houses, known as tongkonan, are iconic with their boat-shaped roofs and intricate carvings. One of the most distinctive aspects of Torajan culture is its elaborate funeral ceremonies. These ceremonies can last for days or even weeks, involving various rituals, sacrifices, and offerings. The deceased are often kept in the family home for an extended period before being buried in ornate cliffside graves or in carved stone graves guarded by wooden effigies called tau tau.
In recent years, Toraja has become a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who come to experience its rich culture and natural beauty. At TWELF-X we are inspired by the experience of cultures when we are on our adventures. Just like culture and tradition found in these indigenous tribes, we honour the traditional essence of watchmaking via our use of an automatic movement. We honor the past, present, and future of timepieces.
