When people think about Greece, they think of the philosophers, its ancient history, mythology and magnificent temples. In Greece, they also host the 2,917-metre Mount Olympus which, according to the famous Greek Mythology, was regarded as the abode of the Gods and the site of the throne of Zeus. That is wonderful in and of itself. This blog, on the other hand, is about the Samaria Gorge, which is located on the island of Crete. The Samaria Gorge is located in the White Mountains of West Crete, in the Samaria National Park. This magnificent gorge is one of Crete's most popular tourist destinations.

The Samaria Gorge is not opened all year long. The Samaria National Park, specifically, has annually always opened to the public at the beginning of May, though the exact date varies each time, depending on the weather and the amount of work needed to restore the path after the winter rains. Either way, no matter which level of hiking expertise you are at, hiking at the Samaria Gorge is a must. The 14.3km point-to-point trail is generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 13h 47min to complete.

The main feature of the whole trail is the famous ‘Iron Gates’, where the sides of the gorge close into a width of only 4 meters and soar up to a height of almost 300 meters (980 feet). Here, you will see many other tourists stopping by to take pictures or simply enjoy the massive geological feature. I have been told that the wind gusts could cause rocks on top of the gorge to fall hence hiking when the weather is questionable is discouraged.
